Fair Banking is a natural extension of work begun by Antony Elliott in 2004. Antony was Chief Risk Officer of Abbey National for just over 10 years and has had various other senior positions in financial services companies. He wrote the report, “Not waving, but drowning: over-indebtedness by misjudgement”, published by the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation in April 2005.

Since then, he has developed a new financial product, the Capacity Card with a partner, George Guernsey. The idea for Fair Banking is a development from this work. It has become apparent that there is a lack of research into what features of better money management lead to financial well-being. If the behaviours can be identified, it may be possible to actively promote them through well-designed financial products. Good research on this topic would enable greater advocacy to banks of financial products that are improving the well-being of households in the UK.
